In Leiden North, you can get a discount on the rent of a self-contained house in exchange for two hours of volunteer work a week: the 'Student in the neighbourhood' project. By committing to projects and activities in the neighbourhood, you are contributing to the social cohesion in the neighbourhood in exchange for a generous living space at a low price.
The 'work' could include tutoring, helping at a football club, filling in forms (taxes, rent allowance) and coaching young people. In exchange for the discount, you commit to 2 hours of work per week. You will be supervised by a community worker (please see the coaching plan).
You will receive at least a 10% discount on the rent. The discount scheme is designed in such a way that you will also always be eligible for rent allowance. Taking into account the additional benefit of the rent allowance, your total benefit may be as much as 50%. In most cases, you pay only € 227 net rent after deduction of the rent allowance; this is exclusive of the costs for gas, water and electricity.
For Student in the neighbourhood, there are 48 one-room and two-room houses with a sunny balcony or garden available at the Willem de Zwijgerlaan: centrally located, near the train station and city centre.Student in the neighbourhood is a collaborative project of DUWO, the housing corporation De Sleutels and the healthcare institution Libertas Leiden.
