  • Description 30 students live in this student residence, spread over 3 floors, each with their own room and sharing the facilities, living room (fusion) and garden. The size of the rooms varies from 11 to 20 m2.The building was built in the eighteenth century (left part) and nineteenth century (right part). The building is also called In den Rooden Hellebaerd, a reference to the (nick)name of the factory that used to be located there. This municipal monument stands on one of the most beautiful historical places of Leiden: here on the early morning of 3 October 1574 the Sea Beggars (Watergeuzen) entered Leiden. This brought an end to a months-long Spanish siege, under which the Leiden population suffered a great deal. The Sea Beggars arrived here, bringing herring and white bread with hodgepodge stew to the starving population. This is still a meal favoured by many people of Leiden on 3 October. You will find many picturesque monuments, canals, museums and courtyards in this neighbourhood. Shops, cinemas, cafes and restaurants are within walking distance. Leiden Central Station is a 5-minute bike ride away.
