Sustainability in general

A sustainable home for today and for generations to come

DUWO wants to provide students with a fair home in a habitable world, now and into the future. In the Netherlands we have agreed that housing will be climate neutral by 2050. The built environment currently plays a significant role in the production of greenhouse gas emissions, and we accept our responsibility to do all we can to mitigate these emissions. 2050 may seem a long way off, but if we want to achieve our objectives we need to act now.

Although currently a matter of extreme urgency, this transition also offers opportunities. An energy-efficient home is usually affordable, comfortable and healthy. Renovations also offer opportunities to adapt homes to current requirements, to make them future-proof and even better suited to the living requirements of our students. For example, by adding rooms and facilities that make living together even more fun.

DUWO has decided to make all properties as transition-ready as possible. This means that because the energy consumption of all buildings has been reduced by installing insulation, they are ready to switch to heating supplied by renewable resources. Wherever possible, we try to combine implementing these sustainability measures with our planned maintenance work.

In addition to the longer-term solutions, we are also working hard on solutions that will have an immediate impact. For example, we procure CO2-neutral energy for the majority of our tenants at favourable prices; we apply technical innovations that immediately make our existing buildings more energy efficient, and we help our residents by offering advice on how to save energy.

DUWO wants to play a positive role in the sustainability challenge that the built environment is facing. Primarily by making our buildings and the living environment of our students more sustainable, thereby allowing our residents to reap the benefits. But, by doing all that is possible ourselves, we also want to help students do as much as possible and, in the long term, help our partners as well. After all, it will only work if everyone plays their part. If we work together, there’s a lot we can do.
