DUWO and the tenants’ organisations (BRES, DEK, Duwoners, VBU and WijWonen) are teaming up to help reduce tenants’ energy bills. Funding is available to provide free energy-saving measures for your student house or residential complex.

Why this project?
DUWO and the tenants’ organisations (BRES, DEK, Duwoners, VBU and WijWonen) are working together to help reduce tenants’ energy costs. Between 2016 and 2019, many tenants paid more energy tax than they should have. DUWO successfully reclaimed these overpaid amounts from the Dutch tax authorities and refunded everyone who was eligible. However, because some tenants could not be reached, a portion of the budget remained unclaimed.
Because this money belongs to the tenants, it is now being returned to them in a different way through the Sustainability Fund. The fund is dedicated to financing energy-saving measures that help reduce your energy bills while making student housing more sustainable.
What does this mean for you?
Funding is available to make your student house or residential complex more energy efficient. You can apply for an energy-efficient shared refrigerator, request a Solar Panel Quick Scan to find out whether your building is suitable for solar panels, or submit your own sustainability idea to help reduce energy costs for you and your housemates.
In short, you can apply for free energy-saving measures that help lower your energy bills while making your home more sustainable.

As a tenant, you often know best where energy is being wasted in your home. Do you have an idea to reduce energy use in your student house or residential complex? Or another idea to make your home more sustainable? You can submit it free of charge.

Briefly describe your idea and explain how it could help save energy. DUWO and the tenants’ organisations will assess all submissions based on their feasibility, expected energy savings and costs.

Not every measure is available at every address. For example, some buildings are already known to be unsuitable for solar panels.

What happens after you apply?
Once you’ve submitted your application, DUWO and the tenants’ organisations will review it.
Your application will be assessed based on:
- whether the measure is technically feasible;
- how much energy it is expected to save;
- the estimated costs;
- whether it fits within the scope of the project.
We may contact you if we need additional information. Once your application has been reviewed, you’ll be informed of the outcome and any next steps.
Submitting an application is free of charge, but it does not automatically guarantee that the requested measure will be carried out.
