The building at the Rijn- and Schiekade was built in the 1960s and has a simple, functional design that no longer meets today’s standards. The new design will preserve its recognizable appearance while adding a contemporary touch. The balconies will be removed and replaced by an extension with striking glass façades, creating more space and allowing an additional room to be added on each floor.
In addition to the expansion, the building will undergo extensive sustainability improvements. Among other measures, the façade and roof will be better insulated and outdated components will be replaced. Solar panels will also be installed. These measures will significantly reduce energy consumption and prepare the building for a future without natural gas.
The renovation also provides an excellent opportunity to give the building a complete makeover. Kitchens and sanitary facilities will be renewed, common areas will be refurbished, and fire safety will be upgraded to meet current standards.
The work will take place while the building is partially occupied. Residents will temporarily move to other DUWO buildings and return after a few months. During the renovation, temporary accommodation is provided in the recently renovated Flanorpad and at the Papengracht. These buildings have already been made more sustainable, ensuring residents can live comfortably during the works.
The complex will grow from 162 to 181 non-self-contained rooms, all intended for students with a campus contract. The renovation not only creates additional student housing, but also delivers a future-proof building with upgraded facilities, a fresh appearance, and greater living comfort for residents.
