Reading time: 2 min

The first phase of the large-scale renovation of the Vlietpanden in Leiden has been completed. Yesterday, Vliet 15, the first building where the renovation work has been finished, was officially reopened. Residents who had temporarily stayed in replacement accommodation were able to return to their newly renovated homes.

The students were visibly happy with their modernized rooms, which now meet the latest standards in terms of comfort, safety, and energy consumption. The building has been thoroughly renovated with a strong focus on sustainability. The insulation of the facades and roofs has been improved, solar panels have been installed, and the heating system has been adapted to induction cooking and heat pumps. This is expected to result in significant energy savings. The communal areas have also been renovated and relocated to the center of the buildings to minimize noise disturbance.

In addition to the renovation, safety has played a major role. New fire safety measures have been implemented, including interconnected smoke detectors, improved escape routes, and fire-resistant compartments. The building now fully complies with modern fire safety requirements.

The residents of Vliet 15 were welcomed last night with a drink, and local residents and neighbors were also given the opportunity to take a look at the renovated building. It was a pleasant gathering that not only marked the beginning of a new chapter for the residents but also the progress of the renovation of the entire Vlietpanden group, with the renovation of Vliet 13 and 11 expected to be completed next year.
