General practitioner in a student complex in Leiden

Reading time: 2 min

A new general practice recently opened its doors in the student complex at Hooigracht 15 in Leiden, also known as the HKM building. The practice, called 'De Leidse Huisdokters', is located on the ground floor of the building and will reserve approximately 50% of its capacity for students.

Finding a suitable and affordable practice space for general practitioners is a major challenge these days, and for many students studying in Leiden, finding an available general practitioner is also a problem. DUWO saw an opportunity when this practice space became available in the HKM building.

Space is crucial
The shortage of general practitioners in Leiden is increasing. Many GPs point to a lack of suitable spaces, which hinders their ability to expand or renovate. This increases the number of residents who no longer have a GP, which is worrying given the essential role of GP care in people's well-being. In order to allow new general practitioners to start, it is crucial to have sufficient practice space, so that the shortage of general practitioners does not increase further.

"With the opening of De Leidse Huisdokters, we not only want to meet the needs of our students who do not yet have a GP in Leiden, but also contribute to solving the broader problem of the shortage of practice space in the city," says Laurens Cramer , branch director of DUWO Leiden.

GPs Dieuwke Brookman and Debbie Melchers want their practice to offer accessible, high-quality care, where personal attention is central: “With us, the patient has direct contact with the GP, with many questions that can be answered digitally or by telephone, which saves time. ”
