The construction of Uilenstede started with a ceremony in which former mayor Reinders drove the first pile into the ground in the Kronenburg district. This symbolic beginning marked the starting point of what would grow into an important residential complex for students of the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam and other institutions.
In 2005, DUWO took over the campus and started a large-scale redevelopment. Part of the campus was demolished, new housing was built and existing buildings were renovated. The public space and infrastructure also received a complete makeover, with numerous new facilities. The renovated campus was opened in 2016. Over the years, Uilenstede has grown into the largest student campus in Europe.
Today, with approximately 3,500 homes, Uilenstede is a vibrant community where countless students have lived and studied. DUWO is proud of this rich history and the vibrant community that has emerged over the years. It shows that the area is an excellent place for student housing and that is a good starting point for further development in the area.
Now that the government intends to realize 438 homes in neighboring Kronenburg, we hope to be able to realize this in the near future in collaboration with the municipality of Amstelveen and the owners. This allows us to improve the living environment in Kronenburg and provide an answer to the major shortage of student housing.
