Changes to rent allowance as of January 1, 2026

Reading time: 2 minutes

As of January 1, 2026, the rules for rent allowance will change. Due to new legislation, the conditions for receiving housing allowance will be adjusted in several areas.

Below is an overview of the most important changes relevant for tenants at DUWO.

1. More young people under 21 eligible for housing allowance
From 2026, young people under 21 can apply for rent allowance if the rent is higher than €498.20. Previously, this only applied to lower rents. The allowance will be granted for the portion of the rent up to €498.20.

2. Full housing allowance from age 21
The age limit for receiving full rent allowance will be lowered from 23 to 21 years. This change aligns with the age at which the statutory minimum wage applies.

3. No housing allowance for shared service charges
The (partial) reimbursement of four types of shared service charges will be discontinued. The rent used as the basis for the allowance will now be the basic rent, as stated in the rental contract.

4. Limited increase in personal contribution
Everyone who receives housing allowance pays a personal contribution.
As of January 1, 2026, this will be slightly increased to €202.52.

The Tax Authority will automatically apply the new rules, but it’s wise to make a preliminary calculation yourself so you know what to expect.
