The shortage of student accommodation in Leiden is still a major problem. In order to solve the immediate emergency, back in 2004, DUWO worked with the Universiteit Leiden to construct a temporary student complex consisting of 500 rooms on the Verlengde Wassenaarseweg (on the border between Leiden and Oegstgeest). Every residence has four rooms, and a number of residences are reserved for international students and rented out via the Short Stay Housing service. Work has also begun on a permanent solution involving the construction of new student accommodation on Wassenaarseweg on the Leiden campus.
