1. What is considered as ‘home contents’?
‘Home contents’ includes a variety of your personal property that is located in your room, in the communal area or in the storage room in your building. Items covered by your contents insurance include: furniture, clothes, audiovisual and computer equipment, jewellery and floor coverings.

2. What sort of cover does the insurance provide?
The insurance covers damage to, or loss of, property resulting from fire, burglary, storms, rain, snow, hail and other extreme weather conditions. A detailed description of what is covered by the insurance is included in the policy documentation.

Back

3. What is not covered by the insurance?
Damage to, or loss of, property for which you have taken out individual insurance is not covered by the contents insurance, for example, when you have taken out special insurance for your luggage when travelling. Damage or loss resulting from theft without evidence of illegal entry and water damage from fire extinguishers or hoses is not covered. The only exception is water damage resulting from attempts to extinguish a fire, which is covered by the contents insurance. Consult the terms and conditions of the policy (available from DUWO) for detailed information.

4. How much will the insurance cost?
The contents insurance premium is € 1.20 per month, and is included in the monthly service costs.

Back

5. My parents already have insurance. Do I need separate insurance?
Yes, your parent’s policy only covers their house. If you are living elsewhere, you need to take out your own insurance.

Back

6. What do I need to do to arrange a higher level of insurance?
Unfortunately this is not possible with this particular policy. Each address is insured to a maximum of € 10,000, even if you are living together with someone else in a DUWO apartment.
If you do not believe that the DUWO contents insurance provides you with enough cover, we recommend that you take out insurance elsewhere. We also recommend that you only take out one contents insurance policy per household.

Back

7. What is the procedure for making a claim?
You can report loss or damage directly to the insurer. See the policy documentation for more details.

Back

8. What happens if I move house?
The insurance is linked to the rental agreement and will therefore be concluded when your rental agreement has ended. If you move to another DUWO residence, you will be offered new insurance with your new contract, with a different insurance number. However, if you move to a residence not owned by DUWO, the insurance policy will automatically become null and void when your rental agreement ends. The policy is not transferrable and you will have to take out new insurance.

Back

9. What is the excess?
An excess of € 70 applies for each incident, both in your room as well as in the communal area. The excess in post code area 1102 (Amsterdam South East) is € 210 per incident. The maximum excess payable by all insured individuals as a group for incidents in the communal area is € 210.

Back

10. For how long is the insurance valid?
You are insured until you cancel your rental agreement.

Back

11. I already have contents insurance, how can I cancel it?
We recommend that you contact your own insurance company or the Generali infodesk for information on how to cancel your policy in your particular situation. You can telephone the Generali infodesk during office hours on 072-5414151. Remember to let DUWO know when you would like their contents insurance to come into effect.

Back

12. What sort of compensation can I expect if I make a claim?
In principle, your effects are insured at their replacement value. However, if the actual cash value is less than 40% of the replacement value of the damaged property, you will be compensated with the actual cash value.

Back

13. We organised a party and someone set off the fire extinguisher. Is the damage covered by the contents insurance?
No. The policy only covers water damage caused in the act of extinguishing a fire by which major damage was avoided. Damage caused by ‘recreational use’ of the fire extinguisher or fire hose is not covered by the policy.

Back

14. There was a fire in the communal area. I am the only one with this insurance. Is all the damage covered by the contents insurance?
No. The policy only covers your personal property and you must be able to prove ownership.

15. Why don’t you offer package insurance? Alongside contents insurance, I would also like to arrange public liability insurance and personal accident insurance.
Student housing corporations specialise in renting accommodation, so offering contents insurance as an additional service speaks for itself. This is not the case with liability and personal accident insurance, as these policies are linked to an individual person, and not to the residence.
