Fire safety requirements

The Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment determines the fire safety requirements that apply to (student) housing. Alongside the relevant requirements set down by the government, the majority of local authorities also have supplementary regulations in place that must be satisfied by letters. In the case of student housing, the letter must also be in possession of a permit. The permit takes into consideration such factors as the number of rooms and residents in the accommodation.
The local authorities operate very strict controls of fire safety on student complexes. For example, are there a sufficient number of escape routes and are rooms fitted with fireproof doors, or at least doors that slow the progress of a fire? Do fire alarms need to be fitted in the building? Are the escape routes sufficiently well marked? The fire department visits DUWO campuses regularly to ensure that they satisfy requirements.
